Jubilee Act: We Did It!
Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Together, we did it!
Thanks to your advocacy and bi-partisan champions in Congress, the Jubilee Act (HR 2634) passed the U.S. House of Representatives today by a vote of 285 to 132.
See how your representative voted at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll199.xml.
Check out our press release in response to the vote, including reactions from religious, labor, civil rights, and development leaders.
Thank you for your phone calls, postcards, emails, faxes, taking the time to meet with your members of Congress, and your financial donations. And for those that joined the Cancel Debt Fast last fall, thank you for fasting.
Now, we pause to take a breath. But it's not over yet.
On to the Senate! As we move onto the Senate, there are two ways you can help.
1. E-mail or Call your Representative to say "thank you." First, if your Representative voted "Yes," contact him/her and say thank you. During the past three years they've received lots of contact from you and those who voted for the Jubilee Act deserve a thank you. If your member voted "yes" (click here for the list of members who voted for the Jubilee Act) call them at 202-224-3121 to express your appreciation.
2. Send a Letter to the Editor of your local newspapers applauding the passage of the Jubilee Act in the House. This sends a message to your Representative and to your Senators that the Jubilee Act (S 2166) is a bill that's important to constituents in their districts and they should consider it seriously. You can send a letter in response to an article that appears in your newspaper, or link it to another related issue that is covered.
Send a pre-written Letter to the Editor now, or write your own!
Thanks again for all you do for Jubilee justice.
In solidarity,
Neil Watkins
National Coordinator
PS Stay tuned next week when we prepare for a hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on international debt. You'll be able to watch the proceedings on your computer, but if you're in the area, you're invited to come and watch them live! The Senate hearing will be next Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. in Dirksen Senate Office Building Rm. 419.
